Newcastle Sacred Harp Singing DaySaturday, 10th of June, 2006 11.00am - 4.00pm 10am - 11am Singing School St Bartholomew's Church Hall,
Station Road, Benton,
Sacred Harp Singing is a
vibrant and social singing style using four part harmony and a notation system of four
shapes to ease sight reading. The Day will start with a singing school to introduce newcomers to the fun of singing fa sol la, otherwise known as Shape Note music. This a cappella form of traditional American hymn singing results in a loud, clear, almost astringent sound that some describe as ancient, others like a human bagpipe or organ. This is the
second
Sacred Harp Singing Day to be held in Newcastle. Singing will be from the Sacred Harp (1991 edition) Pot Luck Lunch - please bring a dish to share Entry is FREE - a hat will be passed round to cover expenses Loan music available.
